Fix an RSS feed using Open RSS

Occasionally, you might come across an RSS feed with issues that can cause it not to work so well. When this happens, you can try accessing the RSS feed through openrss.org, and our system will attempt to fix the feed's issues using the same approach used to parse all of our other feeds.

How to use it

  1. Navigate to the RSS feed that has issues in your web browser.
  2. When the feed loads, add openrss.org/ at the beginning of the URL of the page in your browser bar.
  3. Navigate your browser to the updated URL.

Once the page loads, you'll see a banner at the top letting you know that the feed was generated from an existing feed. Here's an example of the Ars Technica Technology Lab RSS feed, made available through openrss.org.

In some cases, if an RSS feed can be parsed but still has issues, we'll show the specific issues in the feed right on the preview page. But there may be exceptional cases where, no matter what is done, the RSS feed still can't be parsed by our systems. If this is the case, we're notified of your attempt and the error is automatically sent to us and placed in our backlog to resolve as soon as we can.

What it does

When accessing an RSS feed through openrss.org, our systems will fix all issues with the feed so that it works properly in an RSS reader by doing the following.

  • Correcting invalid feed syntax
  • Resolving any link issues
  • Adding the full-text description for feed items (when possible)
  • Fixing any compatibility issues, making it work better with a wider amount of RSS readers
  • Populating any missing information (where possible)
  • Correcting skewed images and fix sizing and alignment issues
  • Using our caching mechanisms to decrease the chances of being blocked
  • Removing excessive feed content
  • Eliminating improper caching implementations that prevent a feed from updating

Once our systems perform the steps above, it will render a working, enhanced version of the RSS feed that's fully compatible with any RSS reader.
